David Barr Legacy

Artist Residency

Inspired by the work of artist, writer and educator David Barr, Michigan Legacy Art Park provides resident artists with time, space, support and inspiration for furthering their work by offering artist residency programs. Our annual residency program offers a two-week stay, a small honorarium, and an opportunity to explore the Art Park.

Samantha Russell

2025 Artist In Residence

Samantha Russell is a Sculptor and life long Michigan Resident. She is an alumni of Macomb Community College, Wayne State University, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design and upon earning her Master of Fine Art in Sculpture she left for Würzburg, Germany where she was an intern on the Arte Noah with their Kunstvereine program. Since returning home to Michigan Samantha has rebuilt a robust art practice spanning a multitude of material and processes to continue the legacy of the importance of hand made objects and the bodily experience in a time of increasing digital dependancy.

Dawnice Kerchaert

2023 Artist In Residence

A Pontiac-based artist, Kerchaert was selected for her a profound connection to nature that aligns perfectly with the mission and vision of Michigan Legacy Art Park. Her work is a celebration of the natural world, inviting viewers to pause and appreciate the often-overlooked textures and forms of the environment.

Joshua Kochis

2021 Artist In Residence

“As the Michigan Legacy Art Park 2021 artist in residence, I look forward to making sculpture as a form of conversation with the natural world,” Kochis said. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, Kochis works in painting, sculpture, printmaking, mold making and casting, carpentry/woodworking, landscape design and material sustainability. His practice is focused on creating images, objects and installations that encourage a more symbiotic relationship with the natural environment and develop sustainable community spaces within that framework.

Theresa Smith

2017 Artist In Residence

Marquette metal artist Theresa Smith was the artist in residence at the Art Park in 2017. Her work draws strongly from nature—and plant life in particular—for inspiration. Her residency involved time working in the park, as well as an incredible education experience and a community iron pour event.
