Artist Eric Troffkin at Art Park May 27 – 30
Troffkin will be adding to Communications Vine, blogging
Eric Troffkin, the latest artist to install a permanent sculpture at Michigan Legacy Art Park (MLAP), will be in the park May 26-30 adding on to his Communications Vine. The public is invited to visit the park during that time to observe the artist at work and discuss Troffkin’s work with him.
“It’s not everyday that we have an artist installing a major piece of art in the park,” says Executive Director Renee Hintz.
Troffkin is creating the sculpture in three sections, having installed the first section in November of 2014. The sculpture is made of galvanized steel, combining the shape of communications towers with a vine-like plant.
“Communications Vine is a project that continues my interest in communications equipment,” explains Troffkin. “Making sculpture is a way for me to investigate this interest – I see red and white towers and other kinds of communications technologies, like satellite dishes, everywhere. They sprout from building rooftops and alongside highways in a way that feels very plant-like to me,” he says.
“Like the sculpture, Michigan is a hybrid, with industrial and technological aspects and aspects rooted in its natural landscape,” says Troffkin.
Communications Vine is the first major work of art installed through MLAP’s Art Access for All campaign, which recently surpassed the halfway point of its $500,000 goal.
